LANAP = Laser Assisted Regeneration

Dr. Hoover & Dr. Molleti are trained and certified in LANAP, a laser procedure designed for the treatment of periodontitis through tissue preservation, regeneration, and bone building rather than traditional gum surgery (which often involves reshaping or removing supporting bone).  LANAP is proven to regenerate healthier gums without the need for scalpel or sutures.  By maintaining the gingival margin closer to its original position, you will experience greater post-op comfort,  and less tooth sensitivity.

During Treatment 

During your first visit Dr. Hoover & Dr. Molleti will perform a comprehensive periodontal examination to determine whether LANAP is right for you. LANAP is done in 2-1.5 hour visits. One side of the mouth is completed, and a week later, the other side is completed.  The doctors will begin by utilizing laser to remove the bacteria, diseased tissues,  and tarter in the pockets around the teeth.  Next, an ultrasonic scaler is used to clean root surfaces thoroughly and remove tenacious tarter under the gumline.  The doctors then will changes the laser settings to form a gel-clot in the now clean pockets.  During the laser treatment, the teeth can shift, so we will check your bite and adjust if necessary.  We will have you return for periodic visits to check your bite. This is very important for your healing after completion of LANAP.

 What to expect the first few days 

Depending on your individual pain tolerance, you may experience mild discomfort the first few days following laser treatment.  To help, we generally recommend Ibuprofen (Advil) or acetominophen (Tylenol). 

For the first 7-10 days after treatment, do not bush or floss the treated side. A soft diet is recommended. No popcorn, nuts or seeds allowed.  Do not smoke as this will delay the healing process. You will be prescribed and anti-microbial rinse to help keep the treated areas clean after completion of LANAP.
